Do you hear a steady rumble in the air? An oceanic roar as a festival crowd gets ready to ROCK OUT?!? Well, then it’s a safe bet that it’s got nothing to do with the Quiet Music Festival. It’s founder, Chris Johanson, describes it as “The only festival where sleeping is encouraged.” Fair enough.
The 2014 lineup is stellar, featuring such leading (quiet) lights as Sally Timms, Mark Eitzel, Christine Shields and Johanson’s own Sun Foot (also featuring Ron “Mr. Burns” Burns and Brian Mumford of Dragging an Ox Through Water). Until now, only a relatively select handful have been able to enjoy the QMF, now in its fourth year. But last year I recorded the entire festival live to 2-track tape (naturally), and many of the 2013 performances are now available on a Bandcamp page for purchase and download. You’ll find songs by Sun Foot, Meg Baird (of Espers), Tara Jane O’Neill, Volunteers Park, Dragging an Ox Through Water, Michael Henrickson, Heidi Alexander, and the mind-boggling Money Mark. Light a candle, pour yourself a glass of red wine (or kombucha, that’s fine too). Take a moment to peruse some truly exceptional performances in a beautiful and hushed setting. It’s fine if you fall asleep to the music.
